Veteran multi-lingual film actor and theater personality Girish Karnad died in a Bengaluru hospital on Monday. 81 years old Karnad was awarded the Padma Shri in 1974, the Padma Bhusan on 1992 and the highest national award for literature, the Jnanpith award in 1998. Karnataka government has declared a public holiday on Monday to pay respect to the best known artist Girish Karnad. Karnataka Government also declared three days state mourning to pay tribute to Jnanpith Girish Katnad.
Girish Karnad was born in Matheran in 1938. The Kannada writer made his acting and screenwriting debut in 1970 release called ‘Samskara’ . The film won the President’s Golden Lotus Award. Besides , Karnad has also acted in the classic television show ‘Malgudi Days’ where he played the roll of Swami’s father.
