Politics of Minority Vote Bank in Bengal
Kolkata : With the All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul – Muslimeen (AIMIM) making its foray in Bengal ahead of the 2021 Assembly polls, Trinamool Congress is now going all out to secure its core Muslim vote bank, which will split if AIMIM joins the fray. This is the first time Owaisi-led AIMIM will contest the elections from Bengal. The organisation has posed as an impending threat to the TMC vote bank.
Senior leaders of AIMIM said that they had already posted posters in various parts of Cooch Behar as they will contest in the 2021 Assembly elections.
Asif Khan Bengal unit in charge of AIMIM party said “We had already decided to contest the 2021 Assembly elections in Bengal. We have started to built our organisation in Bengal one and half years ago and slowly we are setting up our base in various parts of the state. Till now we have set up our units in 17 districts in Bengal and soon officially we will launch our party unit in Bengal. Plans are there to set up our unit in 23 districts in Bengal.”
On Monday, 18th November, 2019, West Bengal’s Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, accused AIMIM party members of being extremists trying to divide people and they are based in Hyderabad at a party meeting in Cooch Behar (North Bengal)
Terming the organisation as ‘extremists’, Mamata Banerjee said that they would lure a section of minorities with the promise of providing them safety and security. She also urged the populace not to fall for such false promises.
She claimed that they are trying to mislead the minorities as they have taken money from the BJP.
A senior TMC leader said: “Mamata Banerjee is right to claim that AIMIM is trying to divide people as we have received reports that they are trying to please the minorities by offering money. They are also trying to split the vote bank.”
Her statement received wide-spread criticism from the AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi who is also the MP from Hyderabad.
According to Owaisi, CM Mamata Banerjee has not done anything for the welfare of the minorities and now she is trying to portray a false image in front of them.
Calling out on Mamata’s sheer arrogance, Owaisi tweeted: “Power has made Mamta Banerjee and her party TMC arrogant. Despite Muslims voting for the TMC, BJP won 18 Lok Sabha seats in Bengal. So, which extremism won? Perhaps, she should do an introspection. ”

Political analysts, however, are of the opinion that her statement comes out of the fear that AIMIM is making inroads in Bengal and the Muslim votes which form her core vote bank might be divided.
Amol Mukherjee, senior political analyst and former principal of Presidency College said: “The AIMIEM has already decided to contest for 2021 Assembly elections in Bengal and so Banerjee has much reasons to be afraid so that her votes does not split.”
