Kolkata (ANI) : Super Cyclone AMPHAN latest updates . “It is very likely to move north- northeast wards across northwest Bay of Bengal and cross West Bengal- Bangladesh coasts between Digha and Hatiya islands clode to Sundarbans during the afternoon/evening of May 20 (Wednesday) as an extremely severe Cyclonic storm AMPHAN” stated by India Meteorological Department (IMD India)

Earlier IMD said that ‘ Super cyclonic storm AMPHAN over West Central and adjoining central parts of south Bay of Bengal moved nearly northwards with a speed of 11 km/ph during past six hours and lay centered at 5:30 pm on May 18 over West Central Bay of Bengal about 700 Km nearly south of Paradip , Odisha .

AMPHAN ( Pronounced UM-PN ) that had turned into an extremely severe cyclonic storm gathered more strength over the Bay of Bengal while moving slowly towards the coasts . It has now intensified further into a super cyclonic storm likely to make land fall on Wednesday , the IMD has indicated.

“AMPHAN is now a super cyclone and it is a serious issue , the other cyclone of this magnitude was in Odisha in 1999 and it was very deadly ” said by National Disaster Response Force (NDRF ) DG S.N.Pradhan
Cyclone ‘AMPHAN‘ will cause heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in coastal districts of West Bengal . East Midnapur ,South and North 24 Parganas , Howrah , Hooghly and Kolkata of West Bengal state are likely to be worst affected by AMPHAN.

The IMD has warned of storm surge of 4-6 mitre height above astronomical tide and will inundate low lying coastal areas of West Bengal during landfall .

- ‘Cyclone AMPHAN is likely to have a wind speed of upto 185 km per hour on Wednesday ‘ said by Home Ministry , Govt. of India
- Heavy rainfall warnings have issued by the IMD for Gajapati , Puri , Ganjam , Jagatsinghpur and Kendrapara of Odisha state.
- It will hit Wes Bengal coastal areas on Wednesday
- The impending cyclone has forced the Indian Railways to divert thevroute for its Bhubaneswar – New Delhi – Bhubaneswar AC special trains running from Bhubaneswar between May 19-22 . The trains will now travel via Bhubaneswar – Angul – Sambalpur city – Jharsuguda – Rourkela- Tata route , bypassing the Bhadrak- Balasore- Hijli route.
The name of severe cyclonic storm ‘AMPHAN‘ was decided even before it had formed. It was given by Thailand backing 2004 . The word ‘AMPHAN’ (Pronunciation ‘Um- Pun’) means ‘sky ‘
