Berhampore, Murshidabad : Berhampore Girls’ College , a Government sponsored college under University of Kalyani, was the oldest Girls’ College in outside Kolkata . It was established in 1946 . The institution was founded by Smt. Amio Rao, an eminent scholar and wife of the then District Collector Sri. B.G. Rao , as a seat for the advancement of Women’s education and uplift in this backward belt of the state.
Eminent Bengali poet Shankha Ghosh served as lecturer of Berhampore Girls’ College for the brief period. Preeti Gupta, Rezaul Karim and writer Gunamoy Manna were some noted scholars who had lifelong association with this college.
Today on 24th January , Berhampore Girls’ College launch a year long platinum jubilee (75th Foundation Day) celebration programme in presence of College Governing body President Sri. Mrinal Kanti Chakraborty, Principal Dr. Heena Singh, Principal of Krishnation College Dr.Sujata Bagchi Banerjee and other eminent persons including teachering and non-teachings staffs , Alumni & Running students of the college.
Principal of Berhampore Girls’ College Dr. Heena Singh said “the college is going to host a year long celebration programme on account of the 75th years of foundation .The Platinum Jubilee celebrations observe with Seminars, felicitations , cultural events and other events which will conclude on January 24, 2021”
College General Body President Sri. Mrinal Kanti Chakraborty said “Then the district Collector held rounds of meeting with representatives from Muslim, Hindu, and Jain Communities prior to establishment of this College”
Departmental head of Political Science and very popular teacher Dr. Khaibar Ali Mian (KAM) said “We always wanted to keep our students away from active politics. And we could do it successfully . So, our college has a history and heritage of violence free campus. However, it does not mean that our students remained alien to the World Politics. Our students were adjudged the best in Bengal for three consecutive years in the category of State Level Youth Parliament Competitions (YPC) ”
Actually, at the time of current phase when Colleges and Universities in India seem to be prone of incidents of violence and students’ unrest on a regular basis ; Berhampore Girls’ College simply a valuable exception from such bad history. The college running violence free 75 years . Open debate , united activities, positive social works and best educational environment are the common features of this great college.
