But for those of us who enjoy sleeping at night and do not take pleasure in psychologically traumatizing ourselves (it took me two years to look in a mirror again after Black Swan) here’s a list of 17 happy Halloween movies to enjoy.

Another cult classic that always begs the question: is Kimberly J. Brown annoying or endearing? The movie is delightful either way.

Scooby-Doo

There are a plethora of Scooby-Doo options to keep the gang satisfied. “Scooby-Doo” comes in original cartoon form, revamped cartoon form, the 2002 live-action version, the live-action sequel, and Scrappy-Doo spinoffs.

Nothing is more Halloween friendly than a literal friendly ghost. Casper delivers. He makes you want to hug his transparent self.

The Addams Family (1991)

A family of moody, highly sarcastic, eccentric humans who make jokes about death? It’s possible they invented Halloween. This one feels self-explanatory.

It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown (1966)

Everyone always raves about A Charlie Brown Christmas but don’t take for granted that Charlie Brown makes for fantastic Halloween company as well.

The Witches (1990)

Based on the novel by Roald Dahl, this story is about a little boy who has to stop an evil band of witches from turning children into mice. But, important note: English witches, which somehow makes them less scary.

It’s hard to go wrong with Tia and Tamara Mowry, especially when they’re not only twins, but twins with magic.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1992)

If you’re feeling brave and don’t plan on watching this movie alone at night, then this horror/comedy could be the perfect choice. The late Luke Perry stars as a teen love interest.

The Haunted Mansion (2003)

A delightfully, cheesy Disney movie about a family whose vacation goes awry. Plus, there’s nothing like Eddie Murphy’s laugh to cleanse the soul.

It’s Tim Burton, so naturally, the plot centers around two ghosts. But they are two ghosts who just need help being scary.

TBH, for a children’s animated comedy it’s a bit creepy… but it does take viewers on a fantastic journey, complete with a happy ending.

We love an ’80s movie about a group of tween boys taking on corporate America that also involves an underground treasure. It stars a young Josh Brolin.

I bet you were wondering when this one would pop up. Of course a comedy movie with Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd fighting ghosts in jumpsuits is an appropriate choice for Halloween viewing.

Nothing is more frightening than watching Robert Pattinson leap around the woods with Kristen Stewart clinging to his back. (On second thought, this might need to be re-categorized in the horror section…)

E.T., or as I like to call it, “the movie that made Drew Barrymore famous,” is eerily heartwarming — (if that’s a thing). At one point in the movie the characters literally dress up for Halloween.
