Mamata Banerjee wants ‘Diploma Doctors’ in State Hospitals

‘New nurses can be employed after 15-days training’

Kolkata (Web Desk) : West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee directed state health secretary to explore the possibilities of introducing a three-year diploma course in medicine in the state that will run in parallel manner with the existing MBBS degree course. She also suggested that senior nurses could be promored as ‘semi-doctors’.

During ‘Utkarsh Bangla’ review meeting at Nabanna on Thursday, Mamata Banerjee made these suggestions to address the issue of shortage of doctors. TMC Supremo told the health department officials that they can think about strating a diploma course for doctors, similar to the existing diploma course for engineers.

‘See if we can start a diploma course for doctors like engineers, then many boys and girls will get opportunity to be a doctors through diploma course” Mamata Banerjee said ‘It takes 5 years to train all the doctors we are getting. It takes lot of time. We employ junior doctos. But, they have to study and take exams. Apart from these, we can employ them in primary health centres. It will give good results.”

“We can start diploma course. Check it out, diploma training can be given in hospitals. There are big seminar halls, government convention halls, you can train there too. Professor doctors will give training” she further added.

However, Mamata Benerjee’s ‘diploma doctor’ suggestion brings controversy again. BJP’s state spokesperson Samik Bhattacharya said that this will remain a proposal from the CM and will never see the light of thhe day ‘. According to him ‘this is dangerous proposition’

Congress leader Kaustav Bagchi that the Chief Minister’s proposal for a diploma in medicine in lines of ‘Civic Volunteers’ in state police. ‘If it put into practice, will endanger lives of several patients.

In another proposal to increase the number of healthcare workers, Mamata Banerjee said that new nurses can be employed after a training of just 15 days. The Chief Minsiter argued that the job of nurse is very simple and it should not take more than 15 days to train them
