Shankha Ghosh received the Sahitya Akademi award for his book ‘Babarer Prarthana’
Eminent Bengali poet and Jnanpith awardee Shankha Ghosh passed away today morning in Kolkata. He was 89 and had tested positive for coronavirus on April 14. He was in home isolation. On April 20, his health demerited. On Wednesday morning, he was taken off the ventilator. The Sahitya Akademi awardee Shankha Ghosh breathed his last around 11 am today.
The famous bengali poet and critic Shankha Ghosh got his under Graduate degree in Arts in Bengali language from the Presidency College in 1951 and subsequently his master’s degree from the University of Calcutta in the year 1954.
He taught many educational institutions, including Bangabasi College, City College, and at Jadavpur University. He retired from JU in 1992. He was also taught at Delhi University, the Indian Institute of Advanced Studies at Shimla, and at the Visva-Bharati University, Bolpur.
He has won number of prestigious awards including Jnanpith Award in 2016.
In 2011, sankha Ghosh was conferred with the Padma Bhushan.
