Siliguri : Dhaneswar Roy, who is know for his legendary work in Bhawaiya music, died on Saturday. He was 87. He had been ill for several days due to old age problems. He had a heart attack on last night.
He was admitted to Falakata Super Specialty Hospital. When his condition deteriorated there, he was taken to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital. It has been reported that Mr. Roy died on the way.
According to family source, Dhaneswar Roy had been having problems of eating for several days, as a result of which he became more ill.
He led his life, contributed immensely to Bhawaiya music. Soft spoken personality Dhaneswar Roy was awarded with the prestigious ‘Bangaratn’ by the Government of West Bengal.
Dhaneswar Roy was born in 1934 and lost his mother when he was just 4. But, even in those early years of his life, he got attracted to the melodious recital of the religious texts by his mother.
He was trained in music under Sudhir Chandra Dey, later he was initiated to Classical music.
At the age of 14, he started learning Bhawaiya music from Naren Roy.
He has presented Bhawaiya music in various television shows. His first gramophone record came out in 1962 when he passed the audition for Kurseong radio. He was awarded by ‘Banga Ratna’ by West Bengal Government.
