Melobourne, 7 AFL :Essendon player Conor McKenna tested positive for coronavirus ahead Melbourne Demons match. The Irishman returned to his home when the AFL 2020 season was shut down due to the Covid-19 pandemic outbreak and came back to Australia last month.
AFL boss Gillon McLachlan said on Saturday the the league had notified the Victorian health department and will work with them. He said no other Essendon players had tested positive.
Gillon added “It’s most likely Mckenna picked up the virus after returning from Ireland. All players and staff have been asked to isolate”
‘We said we make all decisions based on medical advice and our priority is the health and safety to our staff, players and the community” he further said “the club will be closed and cleaned. We will test all players and staffs in coming days., with advice from the health department. Our concern is with the player and we will provide support around him”
McKenna tested negative five times, including on Wednesday., and said there was a “low level” in the players’ test on Friday, and a positive test on Saturday. The AFL boss said he did not know if McKenna had trained with teammates on Saturday and would work through close contacts.
The 24-year-old Cornor McKenna was named to face Melobourne Demnos on Sunday but that match has been abandoned.
