Tokyo 2020: Mirabai Chanu wins Silver in Weightlifting

Tokyo Olympics 2020: S. Mirabai Chanu gave India first Medal in Tokyo Olympics, bagging silver in the women’s 49 KG category in Weightlifting. The Manipur weightlifter lifted a total 202 KG (87 KG in snatch and 115 KG in clean and Jerk) during her four successful attempts across the competition.

China’s Zhihui Hou bagged gold with a total of 210 KG (94 KG in snatch and 116 KG in Clean and Jerk) and created a new Olympic record (OR) while Indonesia’s Windy Cantika Aisah grabbed bronze with a total of 194 KG (84 KG in snatch and 110 KG in Clean and Jerk).

With this monumental silver medal, Mirabai Chanu has become the second Indian weightlifter to win an Olympic medal after Karnam Malleswari bagged bronze in the 69 KG category at the 2000 Sydney Olympics when the weightlifting arena was opened to woman for the first time.
