Anmol Narang : Graduate from West Point
New York : Second Lieutenant Anmol Kaur Narang creates history in United States. The US Military Academy at West Point will graduate its first observant Sikh Cadet on Saturday. A Georgia native, Second Lt. Sikh girl Anmol Narang will become the first observant woman Sikh Cadet to successfully graduate from West Point Military Academy.
Narang said in a statement from the Sikh Coalition, “I’m excited and honoured to be fulfilling my dream of Graduating from West Point on Saturday”
She added “The confidence and support of my community back home in Georgia has been deeply meaningful to me, and I am humbled that in reaching this goal, I’m showing other Sikh Americans that any career path is possible for anyone willing to rise to the challenge ”
After she completes her Basic Officer Leadership Course at Fort Sill in Lawton, Okla ; Narang will stationed in Okinawa , Japan starting in January 2021.
Meanwhile, in 1987, US Legislative assembly ‘Congress’ passed a law that prohibited Sikhs and other religious communities from maintaining their articles of faith while serving in the US Military.
In 2017, after Army Captain Simratpal Singh sued for his right to be able to maintain his articles while serving, the Army updated its policy, streamlining the accommodation process for Sikh troops.
A second generation immigrant born in Georgia , Anmol Narang had an early appreciation for military service due to her maternal grandfather’s career in the Indian Army.
However, Shiromoni Akali Dal , a Punjab (India) base political party tweeted ” Heartiest congratulations to Anmol Kaur Narang on becoming the first Sikh girl to join United States Army. Her appointment as the 2nd Lieutenant in the Army is proud moment for the entire Sikh community across the globe”

However, around 1,100 cadets will receive their diplomas on Saturday in presence of US President Donald Trump. Anmol Narang is one of 230 woman in the graduating class . While West Point has made growing its diversity a point of emphasis in recent years , the academy is still predominantly white and male. There are two other male Sikh cadets at the academy behind Narang.
