Capital punishment for drug smuggling. A Chinese court has sentenced an Australian citizen to death for drug smuggling. According to Ifeng News report, the Australian citizen was sentenced in the Guangzhou Intermediate people court on June 10 for a ‘first-instance verdict smuggling Methamphetamine’.
The Australian identified as Cam Gillespie who was arrested with over 7.5 KG of Methamphetamine in his check-in luggage in 2013 while attempting to board an International flight from Baiyun Airport in the Southern Chinese city of Guangzhou .
The Chinese Intermediate people court also ordered that all of Gillespie’s property be confiscated.
In recent days ,the diplomatic relations between China and Australia have grown increasingly more tense. Over th past six months, disputes typically kept behind closed doors have leaked into public view. It began with Australia pushing for independent investigation into the origins of COVID-19. China responded with threats of economic coercion, and then placed tariff on Australian barely and banned beef from four major Australian exporters.
More over, Australia-China relationship tense high up over Chinese aggression & incursions policy in the Himalayan range. In view of China’s imperialist approach , Australia and India raised their relationship to a “Comprehensive Strategic Partnership” and issued a joint declaration on a shared vision of “Maritime cooperation in the Indo-Pacific regions”
